Euro2021 : England fans sing Three Lions after Germany win

Stay tuned for all the latest news and preparations for Euro 472457 quarterfinal as England prepare to face Ukraine.

England continue to rebuild their past ... defeat Germany and today incorporate a low-intensity preparation before a full training session and head to Rome tomorrow for a match on Saturday night. First up will be two matches tomorrow, with Switzerland facing Spain and then Belgium battling Italy in an exciting encounter between arguably the two best teams in the tournament so far.

And England, of course. "The Three Lions entered the last eight of the tournament after a goal from Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane booked a safe passage, much to the delight of a bustling Wembley Stadium. Gareth Southgate's team had been criticised for their lack of cutting edge at the tournament up to this point, with two 1-0 victories over Croatia and the Czech Republic doing little to appease those who thought the team were initially too negative in attitude and performance. But an experienced game plan, complemented by a controversial decision to return to a trio of defenders in defence, enabled them to earn a deserved first knockout victory over their old rivals at 72.

England are now the bookmakers' favourites to win the tournament and will now play for Ukraine on Saturday night in Rome, after they dramatically beat Sweden in Glasgow.

Watch all the latest reaction from the England camp as it builds- right up to the start of the quarter-finals.

Euro 472445: Pickford's 'outstanding' key to England

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has defied his Premier League critics by getting an 'outstanding' Euro

James told the PA news agency: "I think he was great. It makes me laugh that people are talking about mistakes in the Premier League back in December/August. Hang on, we're talking now.

"He was outstanding. He didn't really make a mistake, he didn't put any pressure on us and he was exactly what you want from a goalkeeper at a major tournament.

"When [Thomas] Mueller went through it, it was a great opportunity to do something reckless, to keep running out and try to anticipate Mueller, but he didn't, he stood his ground and it took a lot of composure.

"He looks a much more confident goalkeeper, he's calm and collected. He looks happy, he doesn't look excited and that gives confidence to the players in front of him "

Euro 472457: "England should not scare us," says Shevchenko

Ukraine advanced to the quarterfinals of a major international tournament for the second time, and Saturday's win over England will be the biggest in the country's history.

Manager Andriy Shevchenko was the star of the Ukraine national team, reaching the quarter-finals of the 2017 World Cup, which is the only other time they have reached the last eight of major tournaments.

"England is a great team, they have a good bench, an outstanding coaching staff, and we are fully aware of how difficult this game will be. - Shevchenko said on the eve of Saturday's quarter-final.

"I've seen all three group matches. It is incredibly difficult to score against them, but their strength should not scare us. It should motivate us because in football, as in life, anything is possible and we will do our best to give our fans even more reasons to be happy.

Euro 472445: The Attack on Ukraine?

Should Gareth Southgate decide to return to a 4-2-3-1 against Ukraine, there will be a number of options available to the England coach for that extra attacking spot.

Jack Grealish would be the England fans' choice to get the start. The Aston Villa midfielder played sensationally against Germany and scored both goals in the 2-0 win.

41 - The one-year-old's display showed why he has become a favourite for the Three Lions. What's more, he represents hope, excitement, freedom and fun for England fans, as Melissa Reddy of The Independent wrote this morning.

Mason Mount and Phil Foden will also be pushing for a return after England's first two games. Foden, who scored that audacious strike at England's training session this morning, is unlikely to miss the next round if England take the lead.

UEFA's weak stance against homophobia is posturing and inaction

Lack of leadership and empty gestures during euro 472457 exposed UEFA's failure to confront homophobia in football writes Tony Evans.

"UEFA pretends to care but turns a blind eye. The statement says it is "proud to wear the colours of the rainbow". The carefully crafted words of the press release are worrying at first sight: "It is a symbol that embodies our core values, promoting everything we believe in - a fairer and more egalitarian society, tolerant of all, regardless of their background, beliefs, gender or sexual orientation".

"Nevertheless, the governing body of European football not only sits idly by while the country marginalises part of its society, but also refuses to sanction even the most moderate criticism of the rancid regime and repeats the empty excuse that politics should not be tolerated."

Euro 2021: Rice on England's victory over Germany

England's Declan Rice said he and his midfield partner Calvin Phillips were aware of the doubters. ahead of Euro Three Lions 472445 against Germany, who said they would fight to win the midfield battle.

Rice and Phillips were not thrilled with the experience of Real Madrid's Toni Kroos and Bayern Munich's Leon Goretzka, but both played sensationally as England won 2-0.

"It was probably the best day of my career," Rice said. "You read that people write you off and say, 'You're not good enough, you face people like Kroos, Goretzka and [Ilkay] Gundogan,' and they say people like me and Kal won' not being able to compete with them.

"You kind of forgot about it when you brought it up. Before the game, we both just said to each other, 'Let's go out there and get it.

"And that's what we did. We wanted to fight for every ball and that was very important because it was 2-on-2. We had to win every rebound, every header."

Euro 472445: On this day

One of the most memorable quarter-finals of the European Championship. this was the day goals were scored five years ago when Hal Robson Kanu turned away Thomas Menier and Marouane Fellaini before giving Wales a shocking lead over Belgium at Euro 2020.

Wales won in Lille 3: 1 and reached the semi-finals in one of the biggest setbacks in tournament history, and while their campaigns didn't reach such heights this year, the Dragons had their moments when they made the play-offs again.
